Sheikh Ayaz: The Most Revolutionary and Romantic Poet of All Time
Sheikh AyazShaikh Ayaz born as Mubarak Ali Shaikh (March 1923 – 28 December 1997) was considered to be one of the notable Sindhi poets of Pakistan in general and Sindh in specific. He wrote various books on the poetry, biographies, plays and short-stories in both the labgauages of Sindhi and Urdu. His famous translations of Shah Jo Risalo, which was written by the 18th century famous Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, from Sindhi to Urdu language developed him as an authority and leader in his domain.
He achieved Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his remarkable literary works and is called as a “revolutionary and romantic poet”.
Early life of Sheikh Ayaz
Ayaz was born on the day of 2 March 1923 in the city of Shikarpur, Sindh. He was a lawyer by career but he also served as the VC (vice-chancellor) of Sindh University. Ayaz married Iqbal Begum, who was also a famous poet of Sindh. He breathed last in the year 2009 in the city Shikarpur, Sindh after suffering from the disease of cardiac-arrest – leaving behind 2 sons and a daughter.
Literary Career
Ayaz is considered to be one of the great voices in 20th century poetry. His outstanding literary career spanned nearly 6 decades and covered a broad range of poetry and prose forms, ranging from the conventional bait,wa’i,nazm,”azad nazm” and ghazal to plays in verse. He wrote various short stories, essays, novel, travelogues, poetry, diaries, an autobiography and the translation of Shah Jo Risalo in the language of Urdu. He also wrote impressive poetry in the language of Urdu and 2 of his anthologies, Booye Gul, Nala-i-dil” and Neel Kanth Aur Neem Ke Pate.
